PhD students according to previous legislations

In the next academic years, the new PhD programmes will coexist with the old ones regulated by Royal Decree 778/1998 and Royal Decree 56/2005, until they are over. These programmes do not allow registration of new students, and only those who are previously registered may continue their studies.

Development of studies

The renewal of registration of academic supervision, application for dropping out, change of supervisor or change of the thesis project, will be submitted to the responsible member of the PhD programme and all of them will be carried out in the Departments or Institutes in which the thesis project is registered.

Application forms for any of those processes are available at the secretariats of the Departments or Institutes in which the thesis project is registered.

Questions/Incidences

Due to the extinction of the PhD Studies regulated by RD 778/1998 and the previous ones, PhD students may face different situations. Some of these situations are described below:

  1. Students have completed the PhD courses and have not defended the Research Project.
To carry on with the PhD studies, students must join a PhD programme regulated by R.D. 1393/2007. In order to do so, they must complete the training stage in a Master's Degree.
  2. Students have defended the Research Project but do not have the Advanced Studies Diploma (DEA)
In this case, a Certificate of Research Aptitude is necessary. According to the extinction processes of PhD studies regulated by RD 778/1998 and the previous ones, students may achieve this Certificate in the ordinary calls that take place in June and September, in the years 2012 and 2013.
There will be four Ordinary Calls to get the Certificate of Research Aptitude, which leads to the Advanced Studies Diploma. Applicants to this call are those students who having been registered in the same PhD programme and having completed the minimum 32 credits compulsory for PhD programmes, have not previously taken this test, or have failed .
Applications must be submitted to the Departments or Institutes in charge of the PhD programme, where the forms are available.
  3. Students have achieved the Certificate of Research Aptitude but have not registered the PhD Project.
Registration will be carried out according to strand II, section 3 and following the Regulation of PhD Studies, Agreement of July, 22, 2011 (BOPA August, 25, 2011).
Only applications that follow what is established in RD 778/1998 will be processed in case of exceptions. In order to do so, a written document must be submitted to the General or Auxiliary Registry of the University, to the Director of the International Graduate Centre.
  4. Deadline to submit the doctoral thesis having completed studies according to 778/1998
Registration on the doctoral thesis may be possible until 2014/2015 and the thesis defence may be carried out until September, 30, 2015.
In no case will there be an extension of deadline.
