The University of Oviedo starts to provide information about its Arthropod Collection on-line

Published on 03/10/2011

The Project, co-financed by the MICCINN and promoted by the Cluster of Energy, Environment and Climate Change, is aimed at providing the scientific community and the society with complete information on biodiversity.

The University of Oviedo has computerized part of the Arthropod Collection of the Department of Biology of Organisms and Systems (BOS) to provide public access to this data via Internet. The first stage dealt with most of the sub collection of odonate (dragonflies), computerizing biodiversity data related to specimens and georeferencing their location. The project is financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN), through the R & D National Plan, and by the Cluster of Energy, Environment and Climate Change of the Campus of International Excellence of the University of Oviedo.

This data base shows information about almost 6000 specimens, providing useful information for the management and conservation of species and territory. Most of this data refers to the north part of the Iberian Peninsula, particularly to Asturias, where half of the records come from.

This data base is now available to researchers, public administrations and environmental services companies, as well as to society, so that the Collection can be accessed through the website ( in the framework of the international initiative Global Biodiversity International Facility (GBIF).
