Asturias and the University of Oviedo

Globalization involves the possibility to exploit new economic opportunities for the agents ready to profit from the opening of wider and more competitive markets. Productivity, employment and education are the key elements to adapt to this new scenario successfully.

Asturias has gone through a restructuring process in the last decades concerning the agricultural, mining and metallurgical sectors. In addition, there has been a shift towards the service economy in the region. Today, the industry of Asturias is mainly composed by SMEs (99% have less than 50 workers) not very keen on cooperation and diversification. The commitment to innovation and internationalization will improve their competitiveness and contribute to the economic growth.

In its 400 years of history, the University of Oviedo has contributed to the cultural, scientific, technological and economic enrichment of the Principality of Asturias and has become one of the most outstanding Spanish universities regarding teaching and research quality, with an increasingly relevant international position. This institution is accountable for more than 50% of the R&D&I of the region, and most of the graduates working in Asturias have attended this university. Even though investment in R&D only accounts for 0.93% of the regional GDP, the productivity of basic research is very high (although the intended knowledge transfer has not been produced in an effective way). The Campus of Excellence project tries to improve the engagement of the University with the companies and join efforts to achieve a single objective of progress and innovation.
