Entry requirements:

In order to register in an official Master's Degree, it is mandatory to have completed an official degree in Spain or in any higher education institution of a member state of the European Union integrated in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) that allows students to take a Master's Degree. Students who have obtained their degree outside the EHEA can be admitted as long as the University can verify that these qualifications have a similar level to the corresponding degrees in Spain and they permit graduates to take a Master's Course.

This Master's Course is intended for students who are interested in history, civilization and sociocultural development and, in particular, in its Spanish or Latin-American expressions, and for those students interested in enhancing the political or institutional action of the social-historical heritage of local and regional communities or of minority groups or professionals, trade union associations or those with specific connotations of gender, age or social status.

This Master's course is especially intended for:

Graduates in the field of Social Science and Arts, especially in History, Sociology, Arts, Philology or Journalism. Graduates in the field of Exact, Experimental or Physical and Natural Science wishing to start sociocultural studies of Science will also be taken into account.

Study mode: Attendance required

Schedule: Monday to Friday, between 4:00pm and 8:00pm.

This Master's degree is designed to meet the demand for research professionals and contracts with the government, companies, organizations and social movements demanding jobs in this field. This demand comes specially from the national research plans undertaken by the Ministries of Education, Science and Technology; from the regional administrations, either directly from the governing bodies or through the corresponding administrations (Education and Culture or Housing and Social Welfare mainly), institutions and regional research agencies (FICYT, Directorate-General for Universities of the Government of the Principality of Asturias), professional associations (CCOO, PCE, the Juan Muñiz Zapico Foundation), companies (HUNOSA), Museums (Museum of Asturias) or local administrations (City Councils quite commonly finance contracts and projects related to the local history or events of different type).

COURSE CONTENT

FIRST TERM

MODULE 1: Compulsory subjects (30 ECTS credits)

  • Methodology and historiography for sociocultural analysis (6 ECTS)
  • Introduction to sociology (6 ECTS)
  • Introduction to anthropology and ethnohistory (6 ECTS)
  • Sociocultural history in France and Great Britain (6 ECTS)
  • Seminar on sociocultural history sources (6 ECTS)

SECOND TERM

MODULE 2: Optional subjects (15 ECTS credits to choose from the following)

  • Human diet and social change (3 ECTS)
  • The cultural construction of collective history (3 ECTS)
  • Erudite elites and Economic Societies of Friends of the Country (3 ECTS)
  • XVII and XVIII centuries. Elites, social networks and sociability in Spain and Europe (3 ECTS)
  • Start and historical development of the State of Welfare in Europe and Spain (3 ECTS)
  • Social Movements and trade union culture in Spain since 1939 (3 ECTS)
  • Sociocultural elites and training of Spanish university students (3 ECTS)
  • History of reading, writing and contemporary journalism (3 ECTS)
  • Seminar on sociocultural research (3 ECTS)

MODULE 3: Master's Thesis (15 ECTS)

There is the possibility of completing one term in the Université de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (Versailles) and obtaining a double degree.
