Campus Reorganization

The central area of Asturias is the most populated zone of the region and is provided with a high communication capacity. This particular feature has influenced the distribution and growth of the facilities and areas of the University of Oviedo, which has been shaped in three main areas: Oviedo, Gijón and Mieres.

In the particular case of Oviedo -as opposed to Gijón and Mieres-, the historical development of the city has resulted in a scattering of the centres and services in the urban area and the isolation of some of these centres that stand as islands surrounded by residential zones.

In this scenario, the University of Oviedo, through the Campus of International Excellence, includes a plan for the reorganization of the campuses and university areas in order to optimize their configuration from the academic and spatial point of view.

The final objective is the transformation of the campuses in specialized areas that bring related degrees together and promote the relationship with the social and business environment

A new concept of campus that has a parallel progress with the objectives of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and where master classes become less important to give more relevance to reduced groups, personalized attention to student, team work, internships in companies and exchange of opinions about them, mobilities of students, lecturers and administrative staff, and also talent attraction: students, lecturers and administrative staff.

Social learning spaces

Included in this new concept of campus as a place of interaction for people, in addition to the traditional infrastructures of classrooms and laboratories, alternative spaces are being developed to promote academic activities, personal relations, culture and leisure. The urbanization project of the Campus of El Cristo is a clear example, as it is aimed at establishing a connection between the two parts of the campus, following sustainability criteria, including ramps to facilitate accessibility and creating meeting points with green areas.
